The tree was ancient, its gnarled bark covered in a thick layer of moss and its enormous roots snaking across the forest floor. Max continued to circle the tree, his tail wagging excitedly as he sniffed at the base of the trunk. At any moment, Max could start digging. That’s what Max had done before, and that was probably what he was going to do now.
