The device kept cutting in and out, producing nothing but static noise for a while. For ten long minutes, Carla fiddled with the device, twisting the dial and trying different settings, but all she heard was that frustrating hiss. She finally sighed and placed the phone on her kitchen counter, disappointed. Maybe it was just broken, or maybe it was something she’d never figured out.
