Three days later, Lansing sat at his desk, staring at the life jacket he had taken from the ship. His phone rang. It was the Coast Guard. “We just picked up a distress signal,” the officer on the line said. Lansing’s breath caught. “From where?” A pause. Then—“The SS Vesper.” The signal was dated March 12, 1977.
