If you love houseplants but are worried about your capabilities of keeping them alive, you aren’t alone in that worry, I can reassure you.
Lots of people across the world love the aesthetic and view of a houseplant nestled in their home office, perched on their kitchen shelf, or taking pride of place in their bedroom. Lots of these same people across the world also worry constantly about killing these plants as soon as they get them.
I get that, I’ve been there.
Houseplants can seem like they have a deep and complex science behind how to keep them alive. It seems sometimes like no matter what you do in terms of watering, light, and position, they rot and die anyway.
However, it doesn’t have to be so hard.
One of the very best things you can do to making being a plant parent easier is choosing a plant that is easy to care for and hard to kill. It might seem like the easy way out and, it is, but what’s wrong with that? You can work up to more tricky plants once you pass this level first.
Without any further ado, here is my list of the top 5 easiest houseplants to keep alive, even for absolute beginners.
1. Lady Palm Plants
Lady palm plants are a beautiful addition to any room in your home. They are big, have a great wingspan, and aren’t toxic to pets (which is a big bonus if you ask me). Some of the other plants in the palm family can be tricky to to look after but the lady palm is low maintenance and difficult to get wrong. It only requires indirect sunlight too so you can place it in any room of your house you like, even a home office, as long as you have at least a little light coming in.
2. String of Pearls
String of pearls are lovely, sprawling houseplants that make any room look more aesthetically pleasing. It will need indirect sunlight and to be watered only every two weeks. These plants are great additions to your surroundings to give them a little perking up.
A great valentine’s gift, perhaps?
3. Yucca
The yucca is a classic choice of houseplant and it might be easier to take care of than you would imagine.
It will need lots of direct sunlight but it requires watering only sparingly. This means that once you find the right spot for the plant, it will be low maintenance from there on. Find a sun-facing windowsill and pop your yucca there, it should be happy for a long time without little effort on your part.
4. Chinese Money Plant
On a different note from the previous installation in our list, the chinse money plant loves a shady spot in your house and it won’t be too worried without direct sunlight. It will like water every week but that shouldn’t be tough to remember, stick a reminder in your phone if you think you are likely to forget. This one is definitely a cute choice for any room.
5. Spider Plant
The spider plant is another fan of weekly watering and low-lit spots. They are easy to take care of and one of the best things about them is that you can use cuttings to sprout new spider plants very easily. This means you can grow your own little jungle pretty quickly.
You can come from a complete beginner’s background and end up with a thriving home ecosystem… How is that for success?
