If you are someone who loves travelling the world and who hates getting stuck in an office working 9-5 being behind a computer, chances are you have already considered how to find ways to work remotely and continue to travel to your heart’s content.
It’s a common dream and fantasy for us travel bugs.
The great news is, there are more and more of us across the world choosing to work full-time as remote, freelance workers and leave the stuckness of corporate life behind. More of us are doing it and more of us are succeeding in doing it.
I do it, in fact. I do it successfully.
So, let me share my expertise and experience with you in such a way that you can begin to have a slice of this freedom for yourself. In my opinion, being able to work remotely so that you can continue to travel is a great privilege and it is something that can be truly life-changing. Therefore, everyone should be awarded the chance to at least give it a fair go.
Here’s how to get started on that journey yourself.
Figure out your pre-existing skills
When I talk to people about working remote and continuing to travel, they very often express jealousy while saying something along the lines of, “I wish I could do that”, or “I wish I had a skill I could use so I could do that”. A lot of people think that they couldn’t work remotely even if they wanted to, because they have no remote job they could do.
False!
There are lots of different people in lots of different sectors and lines of work who are able to be freelance workers. There isn’t just one job that is done online, there are thousands, and all types of skills are valuable when it comes to finding remote work.
Chances are, you already have a profitable skill you can use to begin to work for yourself on your own time. Take some time to think about what you can do and what you could offer someone else, then do some complimentary online research to figure out what other people in this sector are doing and go from there. You can easily join the more than 2 million freelancers in the UK alone.
Set up a digital portfolio
When it comes to winning clients online, you will need to nail your digital portfolio. This will be the first thing that people see whenever they are considering working with you, so it’s got to be good at it’s got to showcase your individual skills and talents.
However…
Don’t be too concerned if you are just starting out and you haven’t had any client work to put into this portfolio yet. You can put in pro bono work and sample work that you have created just for this purpose. The most important thing is to show what you can do and package that up in an attractive way.
Make sure you come across as friendly and approachable too, all work online depends on human connections.
Get good at canvasing to potential clients
When you start out trying to create a career of working remotely, you will need to go to potential clients rather than waiting for them to come to you. One of the best things you can do is read up about how to make the perfect canvas or pitch to potential clients. Once you’ve mastered this and developed a healthy list of clients you will start to see the work flow in with ease. Until then, you have to convince those clients to work with you. It might feel tough at the beginning but if you want to work remote so that you can get out there and travel the world while you are doing it, you have to make these things happen for yourself.
It will all be worth it once you are sitting in a hammock on a beach, typing up some work for the day. Knowing you are free to travel wherever you want to next.
That’s the dream, isn’t it?
