Do plenty of research before you pick a destination
Before you embark on any solo travel expedition, you need to decide where in the world you are going to go. And this is a very important decision indeed.
When you are going on a trip by yourself, it is even more important that you pick somewhere appropriate and safe to travel to. Picking the wrong destination can really impact the experience you have on your solo trip. Especially if you are a woman and/or part of the LGBTQ community.
One of the very best things that you can do to keep yourself safe throughout any solo travel is to thoroughly research any potential travel destination before you set off. Check out books, blogs, videos, and social media posts from people all around the world and see what kind of experiences they had in certain places. The best thing about modern travel is that we have access to so many resources from the Internet to help us out, so we may as well make the most of them.
Do as much research as you can before you book any flights, and you should be much safer and happier.
Give someone trustworthy a copy of your itinerary
Safety is, of course, quite a big concern when you are thinking about solo travel, so you will need to think about certain ways in which you can make your trip safer.
One way to do this is to give a copy of your itinerary to a trustworthy friend, partner, or member of your family. You can even get in touch with your local embassy in the country you are visiting to do so if you are particularly worried.
We very often rely too heavily on our phones these days to keep in touch with people and let them know where we are. But things go wrong with our phones, quite frequently. They run out of charge, break, get stolen, and so on. If we are engaging in solo travel, we need more to reply on than just our phones if we want people to know where we are and how to contact us.
Taking the time to type up and print this out before you go can make a big difference to your overall safety on your trip. It is, therefore, very good use of your time.
Make the most of the mornings
Again on the topic of safety, you need to think about how safe you will be in certain countries alone at night. Solo travel, naturally, means that you will be spending a lot of time by yourself, so you need to consider how to do that while putting yourself at the least possible amount of risk.
A great and easy way to be safer while on solo travel is to explore your destination in the morning and throughout the day, rather than being out late at night. If you get up earlier in the morning you can, therefore, really extend the hours of the day in which you can explore and investigate. Then you can spend the night relaxing in your accommodation and planning your next day’s adventure, without worrying about nighttime safety.
It might not always feel fun or easy to get up early in the morning, but once you see how much more exploring you can do in a day if you do so, you will be hooked.
Take lots of photos
One of the downsides of solo travel is that you don’t have anything with you to share the cool sights and fun experiences. To make sure that you can remember this trip for a long to come and to share your experience with your loved ones, take lots of photos! It is so much fun to bring those photos round to loved ones after your trip and let them in on the fun that you have been having without them. It is a great way to make a trip last a lifetime.
Taking lots of photos with the intention of showing others can also help with any potential loneliness you might face on your travels too. It helps keep you connected with the people you have at home.
Push outside of your comfort zone
When you are engaging in some solo travel, you might feel a little out of your comfort zone in certain scenarios. Some people struggle with going to a restaurant by themselves, for example, whereas others might feel embarrassed going to a theme park or waterpark by themselves.
This is understandable and know that lots of other people feel the same. But also know that pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone is where all the best experiences in solo travel lie. You have to get out there and live in the world around you before it’s too late.
If you push yourself while you are by yourself, you will be amazed at how much you can grow. Then, you can bring all of this growth home with you. Meaning that your solo travel was much more than a holiday, it was an experience for growth and learning that will last a lifetime!
Who doesn’t want that?
